Tatebanko, a three-dimensional paper art form popular from the Edo Period until the early 20th century, is being revived by the artisans behind tatebanko.com. 3-D reconstructions of two notable Japanese works of art, Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” and Hiroshige’s “Evening Snow.” Hokusai himself is said to have been a fan of tatebanko, creating original works in the style. These “remixes” of famed works include modernized “secret” pieces that can be added in for a bit of originality.
Tatebanko’s works may be the only pieces currently available in English, but they are by no means the only modern tatebanko pieces available. Determined enthusiasts can download, print, and recreate tatebanko from the website “minatotatebanko” (Tatebanko with everyone!) (look for the PDFs) and some older (but still relatively recent) examples of tatebanko can be found at http://www.toy-toraya.com/tatebanko.htm. For those with a DIY ethic, it’s a great way to add some unique Japanese flair around the house.
